A Certified Pool Operator (CPO) is a certification issued by the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) that trains technicians in water chemistry, filtration, safety, and code compliance for commercial and residential pools. The certification covers proper chemical dosing, equipment operation, and recordkeeping, and is often required for staff managing HOA, apartment, or hotel pools in Clark County. A CPO credential is different from a contractor’s license — it demonstrates operational knowledge, not authorization to perform structural or electrical repair work.
The Nevada State Contractors Board (NSCB) issues the A-10 (Commercial & Residential Pools) and A-10c (Repair of Pools & Spas) licenses required to perform pool and spa equipment installation, structural repairs, and most plumbing or electrical work in Nevada. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is a measurement of all the dissolved minerals, salts, metals, and chemical byproducts in pool water, expressed in parts per million (ppm). High TDS, typically above 2,500–3,000 ppm, can cause cloudy water, reduced chemical effectiveness, and scaling, and usually means it’s time to partially or fully drain and refill the pool. Because Las Vegas tap water already carries a high mineral content before it ever reaches the pool, local pools tend to reach problematic TDS levels faster than pools filled with softer water.
The Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) is a calculated value that predicts whether pool water is likely to scale, corrode, or stay balanced, based on pH, calcium hardness, total alkalinity, temperature, and TDS. An LSI near zero indicates balanced water, while a strongly positive value signals scale-forming conditions and a strongly negative value signals corrosive water. LSI is especially useful in Las Vegas, where naturally hard, mineral-heavy tap water pushes many pools toward the scale-forming end of the index if it isn’t actively managed.
Cyanuric acid, also called stabilizer or conditioner, is a chemical added to pool water that shields chlorine from rapid breakdown caused by ultraviolet sunlight. Without it, unstabilized chlorine can lose most of its sanitizing power within a few hours of direct sun exposure. The recommended range is roughly 30–50 ppm; Las Vegas’s intense, near-constant sunshine makes maintaining proper cyanuric acid levels especially important, though levels that climb too high from repeated stabilized-chlorine use can suppress chlorine’s effectiveness and require dilution.
Free chlorine is the active, available sanitizer in pool water that’s still able to kill bacteria and algae; combined chlorine (chloramines) is chlorine that has already reacted with contaminants like sweat, sunscreen, or organic debris and lost most of its sanitizing ability; total chlorine is simply the sum of the two. Ideal free chlorine levels run 2–4 ppm, and combined chlorine should stay below 0.5 ppm — a higher reading usually signals it’s time to shock the pool. In the desert heat, free chlorine burns off faster from UV exposure and heavy pool usage, so Las Vegas pools often need more frequent testing and dosing than pools in cooler, cloudier climates.
Calcium hardness measures the concentration of dissolved calcium in pool water, and scaling occurs when excess calcium falls out of solution and deposits as a rough, white-gray crust on tile lines, plaster, and equipment. The ideal range is generally 200–400 ppm depending on the pool surface. Shocking a pool means adding a large dose of chlorine, or a non-chlorine oxidizer, all at once to rapidly raise free chlorine to a level high enough to destroy algae, bacteria, and built-up combined chlorine. It’s typically done weekly as routine maintenance, after heavy pool use or a storm, or whenever the water turns cloudy or green. An algae bloom is a rapid overgrowth of algae in pool water, typically appearing as green, yellow/mustard, or black-tinted water or growth on walls and steps, usually triggered by low or depleted chlorine, poor circulation, or high phosphate levels. Once established, algae can be difficult to fully clear without shocking the pool and brushing affected surfaces. A DE (diatomaceous earth) filter uses a fine, powdery material made from fossilized algae skeletons coated onto filter grids to trap extremely small particles, producing some of the clearest water of any residential filter type. DE filters need fresh powder recharged every 4–8 weeks and the filter grids replaced every 3–5 years. Backwashing is the process of reversing water flow through a sand or DE filter to flush trapped dirt and debris out through a waste line, restoring normal water flow and filtration efficiency. Sand filters in the Las Vegas area are often backwashed weekly during peak summer months, since heavy pool usage and airborne dust load the filter faster during that period.
A variable-speed pump is a pool pump that can run at multiple adjustable speeds rather than a single fixed speed, allowing it to run slower, and far more efficiently, for routine filtration and ramp up only when needed for cleaning or spa jets. Because they draw significantly less electricity than single-speed pumps, they can meaningfully lower a pool’s energy costs over time. A salt cell is the component of a saltwater chlorination system that uses electrolysis to convert dissolved salt in the pool water into chlorine, providing continuous, automated sanitation instead of manually dosed chlorine. Salt cells typically last 3–7 years and need periodic cleaning to remove calcium scale buildup from their plates. Las Vegas’s naturally hard water accelerates that scale buildup on salt cell plates compared to softer-water regions, which can shorten cell lifespan if it isn’t cleaned and inspected regularly.
A skimmer is the inlet fixture built into a pool’s wall that draws surface water, and floating debris like leaves and insects, into the filtration system before it can sink or decompose. Its removable basket should be emptied regularly to maintain proper water flow to the pump. In the desert, wind-blown sand, dust, and dried vegetation make consistent skimmer basket checks especially important for keeping the filtration system from getting overwhelmed.
The equipment pad is the concrete or paved area where a pool’s pump, filter, heater, salt cell, and automation system are installed, typically located along an exterior wall for access and ventilation. Many Henderson HOAs, including communities like Cadence, Inspirada, and Anthem, have specific rules about equipment pad screening, fencing, and visibility from the street or neighboring yards. Direct summer sun exposure on an equipment pad can also accelerate wear on plastic components and seals, making shade or enclosure structures worth considering in unshaded Las Vegas yards.
An acid wash is a chemical resurfacing technique that uses a diluted muriatic acid solution to strip a thin layer of plaster, removing stains, light scale, and discoloration to reveal a brighter, cleaner surface underneath. It’s a temporary refresh, not a substitute for full resurfacing, and can only be done a limited number of times before the plaster becomes too thin. Because Las Vegas’s hard water accelerates calcium staining and scale on plaster surfaces, acid washing tends to come up in conversation here more often than in softer-water markets.
Plaster is the traditional, most affordable pool interior finish, offering a smooth surface but the shortest lifespan, roughly 10–15 years locally; pebble (or quartz) finishes blend aggregate material into the surface for a more durable, textured look lasting 15–20+ years; and tile is typically used as a waterline accent or, in premium installations, as a full pool surface prized for durability and color retention but at a higher cost. Evaporation rate refers to how quickly pool water is lost to the air, driven primarily by temperature, wind, humidity, and surface agitation from water features. Las Vegas has one of the highest pool evaporation rates in the country due to its combination of intense heat, very low humidity, and near-constant sun — commonly a quarter-inch to half-inch of water loss per day in summer, and more with a running spa spillover or water feature. Because that’s easy to mistake for a leak, pool owners here often need a bucket test, comparing water loss in the pool to a bucket on the steps over 24–48 hours, to tell the difference between normal desert evaporation and an actual leak.
