Pool chemicals in the Las Vegas and Henderson area should be tested and balanced at least once a week, and twice a week from June through September when temperatures top 100°F and accelerate both evaporation and chlorine burn-off. Intense, near-constant UV exposure breaks down free chlorine in hours rather than days, so pools without adequate cyanuric acid (stabilizer) or with heavy sun exposure need more frequent monitoring than the same pool would need in a milder climate. Getting the testing schedule and target chemical ranges right is one of the biggest factors in avoiding algae, cloudy water, and equipment strain.

Why Desert Heat and UV Change the Math

Without adequate stabilizer, a pool can lose the large majority of its free chlorine within a few hours of direct summer sun, since UV radiation breaks down the chlorine molecule directly. Evaporation, which can run a quarter-inch to half-inch of water loss per day locally, also concentrates minerals and can shift pH and calcium hardness over time even without a leak. On top of that, warmer water speeds up chemical reactions generally and supports faster algae growth if chlorine dips, so several desert-specific factors push toward a tighter testing schedule than pool owners in cooler climates typically need.

Target Chemical Ranges for Southern Nevada Pools

Free chlorine should stay between 2-4 ppm, pH between 7.4-7.6, and total alkalinity between 80-120 ppm. Cyanuric acid (stabilizer) should be kept between 30-50 ppm so chlorine has UV protection without becoming so over-stabilized that it loses effectiveness. Calcium hardness is a special consideration here: Las Vegas tap water often delivers 130-180 ppm or more straight out of the tap, and while a healthy target range is roughly 200-400 ppm, pools on hard fill water can climb toward the higher end of that range faster than pools in soft-water regions, making periodic calcium hardness testing important even when other levels look fine.

A Weekly (and Summer Biweekly) Testing Routine

Test free chlorine and pH every visit, since these shift the fastest. Check total alkalinity weekly, since it affects how stable pH readings will be between tests. Test cyanuric acid and calcium hardness monthly, since these change more slowly but still drift upward from evaporation and fill water over a season. When adjusting chemistry, correct alkalinity first, then pH, then chlorine, since each earlier step affects how the next reads. Brushing pool walls during the same visit helps prevent the early-stage algae growth that shows up fastest when chlorine has been running low.

Seasonal Schedule: Summer vs. Winter

From March through October, weekly testing and balancing is the minimum recommendation, with twice-weekly testing advised during the hottest stretch from June through September when heat, UV exposure, and swimmer load all increase demand. From roughly November through February, many Henderson and Las Vegas pools can safely shift to biweekly testing, since cooler temperatures slow both algae growth and chlorine consumption. Pools with heaters used year-round, or with heavy tree cover nearby that adds organic debris, should generally stay on a weekly schedule regardless of season.

When DIY Testing Isn’t Enough

Test strips and liquid kits work well for routine monitoring, but they can miss slow drift in calcium hardness or cyanuric acid that builds up over months rather than days, since most owners test for those less often than chlorine and pH.
